What exactly is “Crime Analytics”

Crime Analytics (or Crime Analysis) is the combination of criminology, data science, and technology. It involves studying crime patterns, analyzing intelligence, and using data to help Criminal Justice agencies prevent crime, allocate resources, and improve public safety. 

Why should I consider this minor

Data-driven decision-making is transforming the criminal justice field. Agencies also want analysts who can spot trends, map hotspots, and predict where crimes might occur. This minor gives you a highly marketable, technical edge.

What are the requirements to declare

To declare, students must have completed Foundations of Criminal Justice (CJUS 1511) with a grade of C or better in two or less attempts and must have an overall Charlotte GPA of at least 2.0.

Once these conditions are met, you can fill out the Declaring Crime Analytics Minor form.

What courses are required to complete the Crime Analytics minor

The Crime Analytics minor consists of 21 hours. In addition to CJUS 1511, Students must take Statistics (1220, 12221, or 1222); and CJUS 2370 (CJUS Research Methods) or Political Science Methods, Sociological Research Methods or Psychology Research Methods I, II or (PSYC 3291).  Also, students must select and pass 4 Crime Analytics elective courses.

Are there prerequisite courses

Yes, CJUS 1511 with a grade of C or better in two or less attempts is a strict prerequisite for all subsequent Criminal Justice coursework. Also, Research Methods and Statistics are required with a grade of C or better before taking any of the Crime Analytic elective courses.
