Major and Minor Curriculum Information

MAJOR INFORMATION:

Requirements for Completion:

To complete the CJUS major, students must complete 40 hours of Criminal Justice coursework. This includes the required core courses: CJUS 1511, 1200, 2340, and 2370, – as well as STAT 1222 or 1221 or 1220 – plus one course in CJUS Crime Analytics, one Engagement Across Perspectives course, and 21 hours of CJUS electives.  An overall GPA of 2.0 in the major courses and overall and the student must earn 120 hours.

CJUS 1511 is a prerequisite for all required and elective coursework EXCEPT for CJUS 1200, STAT 1220, 1221, 1222 and SPAN 3221. 

Students must take and pass CJUS 1511, 2340, 2370 and Statistics with a grade of C or better.

To become a CJ Major you must have:

1. Completion of Foundations of Criminal Justice (CJUS 1100/1511) with a grade of “C” or better reflected on your transcript

and

2. A GPA of 2.0 or better reflected on your transcript [note: a 2.0 overall GPA and at least a 2.0 GPA in CJUS courses only are both required]

Once these conditions are met, you can fill out the Criminal Justice Major Declaration Form.

MINOR INFORMATION:

Requirements for CJ Minor Completion:

A minor in criminal justice is available to all undergraduates except criminal justice majors. The minor requires 18 approved semester hours including: CJUS 1100/1511, 2340, and 12 semester hours of criminal justice electives (6 of these 12 hours must be at the upper-division (3000+) level or above). A grade point average of at least a 2.0 in the minor courses is required including at least a grade of C in CJUS 1100/1511 and CJUS 2340.

If you receive financial aid, please confirm with your major academic advisor that you can fit this program within your elective hours and the required 120 hours to graduate.

To become a CJ Minor, you must have a 2.0 GPA [note: a 2.0 overall GPA and at least a 2.0 GPA in CJUS courses only are both required] and have a declared Major (cannot be Criminal Justice) and have completed CJUS 1100/1511 with a grade of C or better.

If you meet the 2 requirements above, please fill out the CJ Minor Declaration Form.

Requirements for Crime Analytics Minor Completion:

The Crime Analytics minor consists of 21 hours. In addition to CJUS 1511, Students must take Statistics (1220, 12221, or 1222); and CJUS 2370 (CJUS Research Methods) or Political Science Methods, Sociological Research Methods or Psychology Research Methods I, II or (PSYC 3291).  Also, students must select and pass 4 Crime Analytics elective courses.

To become a Crime Analytics Minor, you must have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA and have completed CJUS 1511 (with a grade of C or above, with no more than two attempts at the class (grades of D, F, or W count as attempts).
