Major and Minor Undergraduate Curriculum
MAJOR INFORMATION:
Requirements for Completion:
~ In order to complete the new curriculum for the Criminal Justice major, students must complete 40 hours of coursework including the CORE courses (CJUS 1100/1511, 1200, 2340, and 2370) plus one course from the crime analytics focus (3 hours), 24 hours of criminal justice electives, and 3 hours in Statistics (1220, 1221 or 1222). Students must also earn an overall 2.0 GPA in major courses in order to graduate. A total of 120 hours is required by the University to graduate.
~ Sixteen (16) hours of the 40 hours are required coursework needed to complete the major. With the exception of the crime analytics course, all required coursework must be completed with a grade of C or better. With the exception of the crime analytics course, students may attempt each required CJUS course no more than 2 times, including all Withdraw and grade replacements of D or F. Students will be restricted from enrolling in these CJUS classes a 3rd time. Students may attempt the STAT requirement no more than 2 times, including all Withdraw and grade replacements of D or F. Students will not be restricted from enrolling in STAT classes a 3rd time, but completion of the STAT requirement on the 3rd (or higher) attempt will not count toward the CJUS major.

~ To become a full CJ Major you must have:
1. Completion of Foundations of Criminal Justice (CJUS 1100/1511) with a grade of “C” or better reflected on your transcript
2. Completion of Professionalism in Criminal Justice & Criminology (CJUS 1200) with a grade of “C” or better reflected on your transcript
3. Completion of Statistics (1220, 1221 or 1222) with a grade of “C” or better reflected on your transcript
4. Completion of Criminological Theory (CJUS 2340) with a grade of “C” or better reflected on your transcript
5. Completion of Research Methods in Criminal Justice (CJUS 2370) with a grade of “C” or better reflected on your transcript
and
6. A GPA of 2.0 or better reflected on your transcript [note: a 2.0 overall GPA and at least a 2.0 GPA in CJUS courses only are both required]
~ After you have met ALL of these requirements, you can send an email to this CJUS department email from your UNC Charlotte EMAIL ONLY to request admission to the Criminal Justice major. In this email, you must include your full name, student ID number, and the following statement: “I would like to add Criminal Justice as a major.” The subject line must read: CJUS MAJOR DECLARATION. If you do not use this subject line, your request may be missed.
* If you are currently listed as Pre-Criminal Justice or UCOL, you must include the statement to drop PCJU/UCOL and replace with the Criminal Justice major. If you want us to drop your current major, include that statement as well. (For example, “I would like to add Criminal Justice as a major and drop my current major of ________.”) Do not include this statement if you intend to double major.
****MINOR INFORMATION:
Requirements for Completion:
~ A minor in criminal justice is available to all undergraduates except criminal justice majors. The minor requires 18 approved semester hours including: CJUS 1100/1511, 2340, and 12 semester hours of criminal justice electives (6 of these 12 hours must be at the upper-division (3000+) level or above). A grade point average of at least a 2.0 in the minor courses is required including at least a grade of C in CJUS 1100/1511 and CJUS 2340.

~ To become a CJ Minor, you must have a 2.0 GPA [note: a 2.0 overall GPA and at least a 2.0 GPA in CJUS courses only are both required] and have a declared Major (cannot be Pre-Criminal Justice or Criminal Justice) and have completed CJUS 1100/1511 with a grade of C or better.
~ If you meet the 2 requirements above, you can send an email to this CJUS department email from your UNC Charlotte EMAIL ONLY to request admission to the minor. In this email, you must include your full name, student ID number, and the following statement: “I would like to add Criminal Justice as a minor.” The subject line must read: CJUS MINOR DECLARATION. If you do not use this subject line, your request may be missed.
